How Safe Are Pediatric Eye Exams?

When it is time for your child to get a pediatric eye exam, you may have concerns about how safe the exams are. Our optometrist at Dr. C Vision Care, which serves Pensacola, FL, Perdido Key FL, Lilliam AL, and Elberta, AL, can answer any questions that you may have and put your mind at ease. A pediatric eye exam is as safe as any exam your child receives from their pediatrician. Your child should receive their first eye exam at six months old to become accustomed to them and to establish a relationship with your optometrist.

Eye Exams for Children Ages 2 to 5

From the age of two to five, your child should have at least one eye exam. It is during this time that you will likely notice if there is any cause for concern when it comes to their vision. Lazy eyes and crossed eyes are easy to spot, however, you should also pay attention to your child's inability to distinguish colors, letters, shapes, and if they are squinting as they to try to see.

Vision Screenings vs. Eye Exams

When you visit your pediatrician, they will utilize a typical wall chart for a vision screening. However, this doesn’t measure how your child's eyes work together and how well they can focus. These are evaluated during an eye exam and are abilities your child will need when they start school, so it is important to have them tested. Talk to your child before visiting our optometrist to explain what an eye doctor checks to eliminate any anxiety and make them feel comfortable.
